Hi! My name is Alicia Mahon, and I am a graduate student at Stevens. I will be blogging about work, school, Hoboken events, family, school activities, anything that is exciting. Enjoy my blog. Feel free to leave comments.
As a member of the Stevens Choir, we perform in several events throughout the semester. One venue where we performed this weekend was at St. Matthew's Church in Hoboken for the 2nd Annual Black History Month Concert, entitled "A Concert of Spirituals, Sweet Chariot 2009, A Celebration of Black History." The concert featured local artist Latanya Hutchins (soprano), as well as the Sweet Chariot Choir (which included the Stevens Choir). Ms. Hutchins and the Sweet Chariot Choir performed sprirituals such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "You Betta Min'", and "Tis the Old Ship of Zion". The Stevens choir also performed three of their own pieces, "Duond Akuru", "Going Over Home", and "Dide ta Deo".
The concert was fantastic! Signing in St. Matthew's church is such a wonderful experience. The music resonates throughout the church and the sound is gorgeous! There were many members from the Hoboken community there, as well as Stevens students who came out to support their friends. The music was so uplifting!
Next up is Opera Night this Friday, February 27th, in the Music Room (4th floor Howe Center). Several voice students of Bethany Reeve's voice studio are performing opera arias. Many of the arias are quite vocally challenging, but being able to tackle pieces of music such as these is quite an accomplishment!
As for work, we are going surveying in Long Branch Tuesday and Wednesday this week. We are conducting the dry beach survey Tuesday, and the offshore jetski survey on Wednesday. I'll be sure to take some great photos!
