Stevens has planned an extensive array of opportunities for graduate students – no matter what you study, where you study or how you study – to get you oriented to campus and everything you’ll need to know to kick off the school year.
Full-Time Students
Orientation for graduate students who are planning to study full-time on campus kicks off on Sunday, August 23rd with a scenic evening cruise around the Hudson River. This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow full-time students in a fantastic setting. There is no additional fee to participate in this cruise, and guests are welcome to join the cruise for $60 per person. Interested students should contact Erin Selby at eselby@stevens.edu to RSVP.
After returning to campus, full-time students have more events to help them get oriented to Stevens. The following two days are designated for administrative and academic sessions, including a career development overview, specialized campus tours, a reception with faculty and administrators and opportunities to register for classes and meet with financial aid. Graduate orientation will conclude on Tuesday, August 25th with a social event in the evening, allowing you to get to know your fellow graduate students.
Part-Time Students
For students who intend to pursue their programs part time (1-2 courses per semester), the Graduate Information and Registration Fair will serve as your one-stop-shop for orientation and registration needs. This event is an ideal time to get acquainted with Stevens, register for classes and meet with faculty and current students. You will also be able to get your Stevens ID card, and the bookstore will be open for business. This fall’s event will be held on Thursday, August 27th beginning at 5 pm in the Babbio Center. For more information or to register for this event, please visit: http://www.stevens.edu/sit/graduate/events/girf.cfm.
Supplemental Orientation Activities for International Students
In addition to these other events already mentioned, Stevens will offer special sessions for International students. These include English language testing, an immigration workshop, and an introduction to the local area. Additional sessions include an overview of enrollment procedures and access to student services and other administrative departments.
WebCampus Students
Online courses begin September 14, 2009. This first week is actually an “Orientation Week” for all WebCampus courses. During this week you will be contacted by your professor(s) using the telephone numbers or email address that Stevens has on file in the "Web for Students" system. Your instructor will discuss how the class will be conducted and address any questions you may have. Orientation Week gives you time to get accustomed to your online course, order your books, and even get a head start on your first assignments.
Information for All Students
Graduate classes begin on-campus Monday, August 31 and online Monday, September 14. For assistance with registration questions, contact the Office of Graduate Admissions at 800.496.4935 or email gradadmissions@stevens.edu For questions pertaining to graduate orientation, contact Erin Selby in the Office of Student Life at 201-216-8962 or via email eselby@stevens.edu.

As diplomas are handed out, speeches delivered, and photos snapped at Stevens Institute of Technology’s 137th Commencement Ceremony, 49 Ph.D. candidates are receiving doctoral degrees in engineering, management, computer science, and the sciences. This marks the largest class of PhD recipients in the Institute’s history.
Stevens has been home to many doctoral students over the years, but this year’s spike in graduates has a significance all its own. “It’s what we do,” says Dr. Michael Bruno, Dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science, “and this indicates we’re doing it better. It shows significant originality and contribution to the individual fields of the graduates, and also to the field in general.”
Currently, over 350 doctoral students are enrolled at Stevens among more than 1200 graduate students, and that number continues to increase. “This is part of the strategy, part of the process,” says Dr. George Korfiatis, Provost and University Vice President. As part of its strategic plan, the university has instituted 30 scholarships for doctoral students; that commitment, combined with an increase in funding from research grants, has made it possible to make that plan a reality. “We have been hiring faculty with the goal of improving our research capabilities,” says Korfiatis, “and the increase in the amount of money we receive through grants is a marker of a high-level institution.”
This number also demonstrates the quality of the faculty mentors available to the doctoral students. “The faculty are doing a tremendous job mentoring these young adults,” adds Dean Bruno. “It’s not enough to have a good idea; that idea has to have relevance to the wider world in order for the agencies to fund and support the research. That begins at the faculty level. They have both the creative, relevant ideas and the ability to fund the projects.”
While the number itself is significant, Dr. Charles Suffel, Dean of Graduate Academics, points out that it is the quality of the students that are the true indicators of the success of the institution. “We want our PhDs to make a dent in the intellectual bank account, so to speak.”
In the long run these students become some of the university’s best ambassadors. “These are the folks who will go into academia and government. Seeing these folks go out around the world is a significant plus for the university,” says Dr. Bruno. Many will also take their talents into industry.
Eventually, the university expects to confer up to 75 doctoral degrees a year, through a gradual increase in programs. “It is imperative for the U.S. to preserve its superiority in science and technology,” says Dr. Korfiatis, “especially when business has become so global. Stevens is in a great position to contribute to that.”
